He continued his studies including a Master Degree in Physics there before being appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Periodontology and Pediatric Dentistry in 1992. He then moved to a similar position in the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich the following year before becoming a full Professor in 2002 and a further academic doctorate in human biology in 2003. His research activities embrace the physical and mechanical properties of restorative materials with particular emphasis on ceramics and composites. Softstart polymerisation and a 3D wear measurement system are examples, which were developed and introduced by him to dentistry. His specific research focus in CAD/CAM dentistry covers scanner and software developments, which already resulted in a number of commercial products. Especially the research of functional and biological morphology of teeth led to the biogeneric tooth and biojaw model and to a new concept of virtual articulation. He has over the years received a number of prizes including an award from the Dental Ceramic Group in 2002 and one from the Society of Dental Informatics in 2007. From 2013 to 2020 he was also Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Computerized Dentistry.
